What is your favorite kind of fruit? I think I am a fan of most kinds of fruit. From grapes to apples to bananas, I am definitely a fan. I noticed something about myself years ago; my favorite of fake or artificial flavors is usually blueberry. Any candy blueberry flavored is my favorite. I have learned that nothing really uses blueberries in real life though. Even in those blueberry muffins, they rarely have real blueberries and instead use a flavoring when they cook. I didn’t believe it either, but, it’s true. Then I realized that most fruit juices that I choose is often a fruit punch or a berry combination. Do you know how many berries there are? Well in blackberries along, there are over 375 species. Does that answer the question?
Acai Berry, Baneberry, Barbados Cherry, Barberry, Bearberry, Bilberry, Bittersweet, Blackberry, Blueberry, Black Mulberry, Boysenberry, Buffalo Berry, Bunchberry, Chokeberry, Chokecherry, Cloudberry, Cowberry, Cranberry, Currant, Dewberry, Elderberry, Farkleberry, Goji Berry, Gooseberry, Grape, Holly Berry, Huckleberry, Indian Plum, Ivy Berry, Juneberry, Juniper Berry, Lingonberry, Logan Berry, Mistletoe Berry, Nannyberry, Oregon Grape, Persimmon, Pokeberry, Privet Berry, Raspberry, Red Mulberry, Salmonberry, Strawberry, Sugarberry, Tayberry, Thimbleberry, White Mulberry, Wineberry, Wintergreen, Yew Berry, Youngberry.
This list is definitely nowhere near complete and just the blackberry has that many different kinds. We are talking thousands of different species at this point. Yes, some poisonous, the ones with red letters actually. There are a few different kinds of berries that most of us can name easily that we buy from the grocery store. The problem with berries, I’ve found, is that they go bad so quickly. Buy an orange, it’s good for centuries. Buy a banana, you’ll have a week or so (depending on the temperature, of course). But buy anything with the word “berry” in its name, and you have about three days. Then we get the white fuzz we all know too well.
So, I guess if you plan on eating berries the same day you buy them or are baking something with them, they are good to go, but otherwise leave them be. It’s hard to predict how often we want berries. And even harder to find the time to go get the berries if we want them on specific day. I bet there is probably a way to keep them fresher longer. Maybe I’ll go check out these online classifieds to find out.
